There was another shocking fall for a greyhound at Mullingar stadium on Saturday (4th July). The 2-year old dog struck the trackside rail at the start of a race and could be seen crashing into the ground.
Footage of the fall, which occurred as rain fell, can be seen at https://www.igb.ie/videos/videos/?raceid=MGR_2020_07_04_09 The dog, named Whinge Mick, “did not finish” the race. He was seen on his feet after the fall but it is not known if he sustained an injury.
Mullingar track is one of the worst in Ireland for injuries and deaths.
In the past five years alone, 251 greyhounds suffered injuries there and 66 were killed by a track vet, sickening Irish Greyhound Board statistics show.
Among the victims was a greyhound who died at the end of a race in December after falling and breaking his neck. Injuries suffered by other dogs at the track include “severed spine” and fractured hock bones.
At tracks around Ireland in the past five years, 1,891 greyhounds suffered injuries and 625 were killed. The figures represent only the tip of the iceberg - thousands more greyhounds are mercilessly killed every year because they don't make the grade.
As revealed in the "RTE Investigates: Greyhounds running for their lives" documentary, around 6,000 greyhounds are killed every year simply because they are not fast enough. It included shocking scenes of dogs being delivered to a knackery where they were shot in the head and dumped in a skip. Another €16.8 million of scarce public funds has been approved for greyhound racing for 2020. Since 2001, greyhound racing has received more than a quarter of a billion euros of taxpayers' money.
