“Irish greyhound racing is in SERIOUS DECLINE”, with more track closures inevitable, a greyhound racing website has reported.
In an article about the “limited lifespan” of greyhound racing in Ireland and the UK, Greyhound Star has noted that following the announced closures of Lifford and Longford tracks, “it doesn’t take a genius to work out that several others will go when the IGB funded independent report into the viability of each track is finally published.”
Last year, when questioned about the viability of tracks, the Irish Greyhound Board’s CEO hinted at more closures. On Newstalk's "The Hard Shoulder", Gerard Dollard was asked "are all [remaining] tracks assured of a viable future or might there be closures?", to which he responded: "It's one of the issues we have in our strategic plan to do a full analysis of the geographic footprint of the greyhound industry and with the way motorway access has improved, Ireland has become very small so - 16 tracks - I think there does need to be a serious conversation as to whether or not 16 can be sustained into the future long-term."
Earlier this year, a survey carried out on behalf of the Irish Greyhound Board asked greyhound owners and breeders: “If the greyhound stadium you use more regularly was to close because of lack of financial viability, what would you most likely do?”
The Greyhound Star report goes on to acknowledge that the shocking “RTE Investigates: Greyhounds Running for Their Lives” documentary has “hit the Irish industry in a big way”, revealing that in addition to the loss of sponsors, it has also led to cancellations of bookings.

Along with dramatic drops in track attendance and sponsorship, a fall in greyhound owners and trainers - as well as a reduction in the number of greyhounds - are hastening the end of racing.
“Britain relies on Ireland for 90% of its greyhounds,” the Greyhound Star report outlines. “Litters are already down by around a third in the last decade [and] those figures could soon go into freefall...We are already seeing the SLOWEST AND LEAST ENTHUSIASTIC HOUNDS EVER TO DRAW AN IRISH BREATH being shipped over to the UK’s dog hungry tracks.”
There are growing calls on the government to ban greyhound racing. An opinion poll conducted by TheJournal.ie shows that an 80 per cent majority want politicians to permanently end the massive state grants that are keeping greyhound racing and its associated animal cruelty alive. Petitions urging the government to stop the funding have been signed over 250,000 times.
