A big thank you to the Society of St Vincent de Paul for this week removing greyhound racing from its list of fundraising ideas.

The positive move came after the cruelty and killing in greyhound racing was highlighted.

The Society of St Vincent de Paul is the latest in a growing list of charities which have rejected greyhound racing.

Other charities which have previously said NO to greyhound racing include Parkinson's Ireland, The Hope Foundation, Cara Projects, Movember and Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind.

We are appealing to other fundraising charities and GAA sports clubs to follow this good example and stay away from greyhound tracks. Fundraisers at tracks directly support the cruel greyhound industry which kills 6,000 dogs every year because they are not fast enough to win races. Tracks take a significant 30-40% ticket commission and also profit from food and drink sales on the day.

It’s an outrage that charities are forced to fundraise while greyhound racing receives millions of euros of taxpayers’ money in government grants. An opinion poll conducted by TheJournal.ie shows that an 80 per cent majority wants the government to permanently end the state grants which are keeping greyhound racing and its associated animal cruelty alive. Petitions urging the government to stop the funding have been signed over 250,000 times. Please respond to the action alert below and demand an end to the funding.

Since 2001, the Irish Government has paid out around a quarter of a billion euros of taxpayers' money to greyhound racing, including €16.8 million for 2019. Following the shocking RTE Investigates revelations about cruelty and killing, it is time for these grants to be finally ended.
