Sligo County Councillor Gino O’Boyle has called on the government to stop funding the cruel greyhound industry and redirect the funds to animal welfare groups.
The People Before Profit Councillor raised the issue at this week’s meeting of Sligo County Council.
Speaking on Ocean FM afterwards, he stated: “Since 2001, the government has funded the greyhound industry over €250,000,000 and this year alone, it received €16.8 million. To be giving €16.8 million a year to the greyhound industry which has killed over 6,000 dogs per year out of the 16,000 greyhounds that are born is quite DISGRACEFUL.”

A big thank you to Councillor O’Boyle for joining calls for an end to the government’s shameful funding of greyhound racing. An opinion poll conducted by TheJournal.ie shows that an 80 per cent majority wants the government to permanently end the state grants which are keeping greyhound racing and its associated animal cruelty alive. Petitions urging the government to stop the funding have been signed over 250,000 times.
Cllr O’Boyle has previously expressed support for a ban on fur farming and highlighted the plight of Irish greyhounds exported to China, a country with no animal welfare laws.
