Extracts from the damning “Business Analysis Report” which the Irish Greyhound Board tried to hide.
The €115,000 report by consultants Preferred Results Ltd was completed in 2017 but was never published. “RTÉ Investigates” sought access to the report under the Freedom of Information Act but was refused.
The report found that the “culling of dogs is out of control”, with around 6,000 greyhounds killed every year because they are not fast enough to win races. “The conclusion that large numbers of dogs are culled based on their performance would appear to be indisputable,” it stated.
Only when the IGB became aware that RTE was to feature contents from the report in its shocking “Greyhounds Running for their Lives” documentary did it publish parts of the report.

SELECTED EXTRACTS
Dog pool size is out of control. Culling of dogs is out of control and blanket re-homing is not an option.
Evaluation of “waste” - Leaving aside emotions with respect to the culling of dogs, from a “lean” perspective is is simply very wasteful to invest in so many pups and to get so little out of them in return.
The conclusion that large numbers of dogs are culled based on their performance would appear to be indisputable.

“It is very important to quantify the level of culling which may exist due to the fact that from an animal rights perspective, it could threaten the very existence of the industry and from a cost perspective it could do likewise.”
Given that there is likely to have been some level of euthanasia of weaker pups, the figure of 5% mortality which refers to morality between 2 weeks and 13 months was used to calculate the number of pups available in theory for RMS Registration.
Prize money incentivizes breeding and promotes culling which could potentially close the industry down. Reward incentives incentivize breeding and promotes culling which could potentially close the industry down.
Decouple IGB [Irish Greyhound Board] from ICC [Irish Coursing Club] by establishing an “Irish Greyhound Racing Stud Book”
It is understood that in practice, a really good stud dog is worth 200K or even 300K and that A POOR ONE IS WORTH NOTHING and that about 20 stud dogs is all that are actually being used at any given time.
The industry needs to act to prevent against the below cost dumping of dogs into the UK which is ultimately under-pinned by Irish taxpayers’ money.
ACTION ALERT
Say NO to the cruel greyhound industry - don't attend greyhound races or fundraisers/hen parties/office parties held at greyhound tracks
STOP THE STATE FUNDING FOR GREYHOUND RACING
Since 2001, the Irish Government has paid out around a quarter of a billion euros of taxpayers' money to greyhound racing, including €16.8 million for 2019. Following the shocking RTE Investigates revelations about cruelty and killing, it is time for these grants to be finally ended. Not a single cent more of public funds should end up in this shameful industry. Contact Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe now.
