MICA FAMILIES DEMAND THE SAME TREATMENT AS PYRITE
MICA FAMILIES DEMAND THE SAME TREATMENT AS PYRITE
The Issue
Thousands of families in Donegal's homes are affected by defective blocks - supplied primarily by Cassidy Bros in Buncrana. These homes are crumbling around them.
Cassidy Bros have never been investigated by Government for this scandal and moreover Donegal County Council continue to use them as their main supplier for concrete products, even though hundreds of their own social housing units and buildings (schools, public buildings etc.) are also affected.
The Government introduced a redress scheme in Jan 2020 designed to help families fix their homes. Cassidys will make millions of euro off this scheme as Donegal County Council are using their material to build new social housing units/fix the existing mica affected units. It beggars belief that the company responsible for this catastrophe are making millions off it from the public purse whilst the families in Donegal whose homes are affected by mica are being asked to contribute (at a minimum) 10% to the rebuild costs to their home plus accomodation costs when work is carried out. However, with the HUGE increase in building materials due to Brexit and increasing builders prices, the cost of these 'fixes' and rebuilds as well as the cost of the testing (circa 6k upfront for each family) has moved the scheme more and more out of reach of MOST families.
Mica affected families are asking the Irish Government to reconsider this scheme and to treat us the same as those families affected by pyrite i.e.
100% funded scheme
Accommodation costs when work is being done
Families in Donegal are on their knees and need help. Please sign and support.
