On the 22nd August 2017 a bullock in a Mayo Mart attempted to jump over the gate of its enclosure and broke his two back legs while trying to do this.
(A mart the term used in Ireland for a place where farmers go to buy and sell farm animals.)
The bull lay on the cold, cement floor of its enclosure in the mart FOR 10 hours without anyone acknowledging the pain the bull may have been in.
Its being said that a vet administered pain relief directly after the accident. This was it. For 10 more hours the bull lay there with TWO BROKEN LEGS, bleeding profusely and nobody came to his assistance. After 10 hours in pain the bull was finally euthanised.
Animal welfare is at an all time low in Ireland and there doesn't seem to be an end to animals suffering at the hands of humans.
What we need is improved legislation to not only protect animals, but prosecute those who make them suffer. there should be cameras in all marts and slaughterhouses making those who cause unnecessary suffering to animals ANSWERABLE.
