Equality for family carers

Equality for family carers

The Issue

Hopefully I can gain some support from my fellow carers.

To whom it may concern,

I am very unhappy about the treatment of family carers in Ireland by permanent tsb. They do not regard carers payment as an income when people like myself apply for loans/overdrafts or credit cards.
This is deeply discriminatory as we do not choose to be carers, we do not choose to not work outside the family home. We have mortgages and cars and bills just like everyone else. Our houses need maintaining and we deserve holidays just like everyone else.
Carers allowance is our income. We pay tax. We should be entitled to the same rights as every other working person.
I personally will be a carer for at least the next 14 years, which means I will be 50 years old by the time I can re-enter the work force. At 50 years old and 20 years out of the work force I can't imagine that I would earn close to what I earn now. It is time banking policies and procedures change to accommodate the thousands of people in ireland who did not choose to have sick children or special needs children or even terminally ill children.
It's a disgrace that we are discriminated against.

Carers work 24/7 with no holidays, perks or pensions.

Hopefully we can make a change if we all stand together.
