Tonight the Uquutaq society began the process of turning 778 into a low barrier shelter. This building was previously the mens shelter. This building would become a place for intoxicated/under the influence men and women to be between 8pm and 8am. The current building is in very close proximity to family homes and is derelict. 

The buildings within 20 feet of this shelter house families, and elders. They will now be again forced to endure the violence, sexual acts, and public drinking that plagued the mens shelter. The society did nothing to adress these problems in the past, and have done nothing to address them currently at their new shelter location

 3 staff members is nowhere near enough to ensure the safety of the neighborhood. The current patrons of the mens shelter have a history of violence towards the neighbours and their children. The intoxicated clients have vandalized private peoperty, both houses and vehicles and the Uquutaq society has not done anything to discourage such behaviour. Rental tenants and home owners have their windows smashed, in their units, vehicles and have had theft from their homes. 

Do not allow our families to be threatened and traumatized by the poor mismanagement of the  Uquutaq society. Say NO! To the low barrier shelter in neighborhoods with families. Find an alternative building, that is safe for everyone involved.
