With climate change, every fraction of a degree matters. To effectively engage Americans in urgently needed solutions, climate data and reporting needs to be easier to understand. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) must make a simple but critical change and include Fahrenheit in addition to Celsius when presenting data on global temperature and climate change for American audiences. For too many, Celsius underplays the problem we’re facing.

The UN Environment Programme’s Emissions Gap Report 2021, released in October 2021, warns the world is “on track for a global temperature rise of 2.7 degrees C by the end of the century.” That converts to a rise of nearly 5 degrees Fahrenheit.

But a recent nationwide poll indicates that most Americans are unfamiliar with Celsius or do not understand how to convert to Fahrenheit. Less than one-third (31%) of voters correctly pick the equivalent degrees in Fahrenheit for a 2 Celsius increase in average global temperature.

Imagine your child with a temperature of 104 degrees. That’s the emergency we face with a planet on track for a 5 degree rise in temperature. The impacts of extreme heat waves, drought, wildfire, sea-level rise and the loss of countless plant and animal species will radically alter life for all of us and exacerbate inequality.

We need your help to convince the IPCC to change its policy and agree to include Fahrenheit in all reports and communications for American audiences. Please sign our petition to the IPCC today. It’s past time for a change.
