SF410 - A bill designed to grant access to the overdose antidote called Narcan.
Narcan (also called Naloxone) reverses an opioid overdose.
- Naloxone hydrochloride is a generic, low-cost, non-narcotic opioid antagonist that blocks the brain cell receptors activated by opioids like oxycodone and hydrocodone, as well as heroin and other opiates.
- Sold under the name Narcan, naloxone is a fast-acting drug that, when administered during an overdose, blocks the effects of opioids on the brain and restores breathing within two to three minutes of administration.
- Naloxone is not psychoactive, has no potential for abuse, and side effects are rare.
- The State of Iowa does NOT have any laws addressing naloxone access for families or opiate users.
The bill is a must for families who have a loved one with an addictive illness and practical for anyone prescribed opiates. Narcan is over 40 years old and has been used by health care professionals to save lives. Why not Iowa families? Let's pass this bill to give Iowans a chance to live.
