Allow cameras in Iowa nursing homes

The Issue

Residents living in longterm care facilities in Iowa and most states are not guaranteed the right to have security cameras or audio recording devices in their living spaces. This is needed in order to ensure the safety and security of our vulnerable loved ones.  There is no law in Iowa that prohibits cameras in nursing homes, but facilities can say no. Neglect and injuries sustained in nursing homes has been a consistent and growing problem, causing families to wonder and worry about their fragile loved ones.

My sister, who was in her early 60's, developed multiple bed sores and sustained other injuries as a result of abject neglect while in care homes.  When we tried to install a camera in her room the facility refused to permit this.

Nursing homes have an obligation to provide an expected standard of quality, compassionate care. Allowing the resident or a family member the right to install a camera will help to ensure this.

We believe that a law allowing security cameras in nursing homes would greatly enhance the health and well-being of nursing home residents. We strongly urge our Iowa legislators to pass law(s) securing the right to have cameras in residents' living spaces.

I have started this petition for a dear friend and her mother.  My friend doesn't live near her mother,  who has reported issues of rough physical treatment and scolding for frequent requests to use the bathroom.  Her nursing home has denied her request to install cameras. We see no reason her request should be denied, as at least 18 states already have passed legislation allowing cameras.
