Don't Erase Our History: Local Organizations at Iona College

Don't Erase Our History: Local Organizations at Iona College
The Issue
Hello everyone. It was announced today that the administration of Iona College has decided to move Greek Life in a "new direction". In other words, by fall semester of 2022, Iona College will have dissolved all local organizations. For those that do not know what this means, a local organization is a sorority or fraternity founded at the college and it only exists in the place it was founded. Local organizations have the ability to pick and choose their own philanthropies, pay special attention to the community in which they were founded and have deep rooted ties to the institution. Currently at Iona, there are 10 greek organizations, 5 of which are local, dating all the way back to 1973. These include Gamma Lambda Rho (1973), Psi Kappa Theta (1980), Delta Theta Beta (1984), Zeta Kappa Chi (1984), and Phi Gamma Chi (1988).
Iona College, until recently, has been founded on the ideals of traditions, service, and a strong community. The administration would like to see all local organizations either absorbed by an already existing national sorority/fraternity, or they will be dissolved entirely. In doing so, this would erase all of the hard work and dedication of our current members and those who came before us. As a member of a local organization, I am proud to be a part of such a unique and strong group of individuals and would hate to see all of our values, traits, history, and features be erased.
Please sign this petition to help out the students of Iona College. We need to let it be known that our voices matter and we will not be erased. Move the World. Fight the Good Fight. Make it a great day to be a Gael, because without these amazing groups on campus, I'm not sure how it could be.
