In early July the Dutch Parliament passed a motion calling on their foreign affairs minister to explore filing a legal brief at the International Court of Justice in The Hague under the UN Genocide Convention for genocide and other atrocities committed by Myanmar against the Rohingya. If initiated this process would hold the state of Myanmar accountable, and it would begin a process of restitution for Rohingya survivors of Genocide.
In a statement put out by the Institute of Statelessness and Inclusion (based in London) representatives of the Rohingya Human Rights Network in Canada and from around the world signed a letter to the Dutch government which included the following statement:
"State Parties to the Genocide Convention have a legal and moral duty to hold Myanmar to account for the genocide perpetrated against the Rohingya, along with other associated violations of the Convention, and to bring the matter to the ICJ."
