A CALL TO ACTION -- YOUR HELP IS NEEDED TO PUT MORE PRESSURE ON PRIME MINISTER JUSTIN TRUDEAU TO TAKE ACTION TO HELP THE ROHINGYA This video about a demonstration calling for action to help the Rohingya, for which I was interviewed, was posted on September 14th. It is now more than a month later and despite 44,000 people who signed this petition, despite columns in newspapers and on media sites calling for the government to act, despite an appeal from Amnesty International Canada and dozens of other civil society groups, despite a call to act by former Liberal foreign affairs minister Lloyd Axworthy and former UN ambassador Alan Rock to revoke Aung San Suu Kyi's honourary citizenship, despite demonstrations by thousands of Canadians across the country calling on the government to act, despite MPs and Senators calling for government action, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has yet to do anything but express "concern" and "disappointment". In fact, the government hasn't even admitted that what is happening to the Rohingya is a genocide despite a report stating this was the case given to the UN in 2015 by a think tank from the University of St. Mary's in London. The words of the prime minister are meaningless to the women who have been gang raped, to the children who have witnessed the horror of seeing family members butchered before their eyes, to the mothers who had children ripped from their arms and killed in horrific fashion. For many Canadians this is a decisive moment for the Prime Minister. How he directs Canada's response to the atrocities being committed against the Rohingya will determine whether he is worthy of support from Canadians who value humanity over politics. If only the Prime Minister could shed tears for the Rohingya victims of genocide the way he did when asked to comment on the death of Tragically Hip lead singer Gord Downie a few days ago. It's time for all those who have worked to help the Rohingya, those who have advocated on behalf of this voiceless minority, those who want Canada to demonstrate its commitment to upholding human rights and the rule of law, to put additional pressure on the Prime Minister and Liberal MPs AND work with opposition MPs and Senators to get the government to take action. The ultimate responsibility of any politician is to help save the lives of the innocent. If the PM continues to equivocate and doesn't take action to help the Rohingya then one has to question the Prime Minister's commitment to defending human rights, democracy, freedom and the rule of law, especially where it concerns someone who was given a Canadian honour for upholding these values, but is now complicit in crimes against humanity and genocide. https://www.facebook.com/ajplusenglish/videos/1043116409163199/
