The Issue

My parents are immigrants who came to America in pursuit of the American Dream. My father, a research engineer, contributed to the development of better windshields for Blackhawk helicopters, enhancing the safety and resilience of our nation's defense. My mother has dedicated her life as a doctor, healing and comforting countless patients, driven by a deep commitment to her profession and her community. Both have lived and shared the beauty of their Muslim identity through service to others.

Therefore, I am appalled to hear about the calls to exclude Mayor Zohran Mamdani from the 25th Anniversary 9/11 ceremony. These calls are not merely an affront to him but are symptomatic of a larger, deeply troubling Islamophobia that continues to fester in our society. This bigotry has no place in New York City—a city built on the principles of diversity, inclusion, and resilience against hate.

Muslims played and continue to play a vital role in our communities across New York City and this nation. Excluding a public official because of his faith sends a message of division and intolerance. This not only dishonors the memory of 9/11 and the values of unity it should represent but also overlooks the contributions of Muslim Americans who, like my parents, work to better this nation every day.

Inviting Mayor Mamdani is essential not just to honor community leaders but to reaffirm our commitment to the fundamental values that define America. We cannot let fear and prejudice overshadow our collective history and accomplishments. Rather, we must stand united against those who seek to divide and oppress. Our diversity is our strength, and everyone who embodies the spirit of public service, regardless of their faith, should have a place in commemorations of our shared national tragedies.

Let us come together and call upon the New York City leadership to extend an invitation to Mayor Zohran Mamdani for the 25th Anniversary 9/11 ceremony. By doing so, we uphold the true spirit of 9/11 remembrance, which is about love, unity, and resilience. Let’s send a message that all communities, particularly our Muslim brothers and sisters, are valued and integral to the fabric of our city.

Please sign this petition to ensure that all voices are heard and all have a seat at the table in remembrance of 9/11.
