Thank you to all of you who have supported my petition to date. I am proud of the progress my petition is making and am overwhelmed by the support it has received to date. This is just the start - I will continue to use my experience to push for much needed change for struggling patients such as myself under the care of Swansea Bay Health board's mental health services.
I am pleased to say that I have now been able to pass my petition onto senior staff at Swansea Bay Health board who say 'they welcome me raising concerns about the service if I feel the service I have received is not meeting my needs' and that 'they're sorry to hear about my challenges'. They have said 'they will ask the service for an update' regarding my treatment which is a positive. I continue to be let down - Michelle Bidder CPN from Swansea Community Mental Health team had arranged to meet with me tomorrow and this was agreed at my last meeting but now she cannot come now as 'she's on leave'. Last week she couldn't see me due to 'being on duty'. Also, in my last meeting 'she had to go' as she couldn't give me answers to basic questions I was asking about my care. She also mislead me - one minute 'I'm too out of control for DBT' and now apparently 'I'm too in control and need to be aggressive in the community for DBT'. Qualified psychiatrists have said I need DBT so this needs to be upheld - a nurse should not dismiss my treatment needs! My treatment and needs continue not to be met. I still lack a care coordinator and adequate therapy plans, as well as a care and treatment plan from the community mental health team. I call upon senior staff at the health board to actively address my concerns and urgently give me a clear plan so I can see a way forward. I also call upon them to meet with me urgently to discuss my concerns to date and plans for my treatment going forward, as well as what they are doing to prevent my shocking experience to date from happening to others.
I finally had my medical records released following solicitor involvement last week which has allowed me to further evidence my experiences, and give me evidence for plans for my care which have been stated yet not followed. The records were suddenly released the day after I got a solicitor involved which says a lot as it'd been asking to have them for weeks. My records were illegally withheld from me without due reason.
The records sum up Ward F and mental health services very well - one thing is said and is then contradicted later down the page! They are also full of lies and shocking statements about myself. The most shocking statement being that me taking brazil nuts to end my life and nearly dying in anaphylaxis was just 'attention seeking'. It is clearly stated in my records I was promised a care coordinator and DBT therapy by Dr. Provan in February with the timeline of care coordination being sorted a 'week or so' - It is now months down the line and I still lack any details or evidence of actions being taken to address my care needs! Staff later deny this was promised in later records. If a doctor says something nurses should stick to it but instead they failed to do my referral properly, chase my referral and constantly told this wasn't said and that I might not get it. This is despite me being in clear need of help as I still am.
Since my petition, so many people who have also had similar experiences to me have been in touch and whilst it's reassuring I'm not alone in my struggles mental health services keep letting people down like myself and have been doing so for years. Swansea Bay NHS need to step up and do better. The Welsh Government and senior members of the Welsh NHS also need to step up to hold services accountable, as they are currently severely failing.
I am sad that since my petition was published it has come to my attention that a patient of Dr Robertson's Jean Pike lost her life due to neglect by herself. The doctor in question failed to admit her and give her safety when she clearly needed it which resulted in her losing her life. Instead, she dismissed her concerns about her safety in her cries for help and refused to admit her despite her clearly being in need of support and hospitalisation, without due reason for her actions. I took a while in my decision whether to name her but as a psychiatrist she has people's lives in her hands so needs to be held accountable and appropriately disciplined for her failures. She still has her job despite this and continues to treat patients with neglect as she was found guilty of in the coroner's court!
What is most concerning is that the coroner's report made reference to an internal investigation by Swansea Bay Health board which found there is 'evidence of regular and effective communication between support staff, community staff and hospital staff' which has certainly not been my experience to date, nor others. I call upon the health board to recognise their failures and not dismiss such concerns. A death occurred due to failures and changes need to be made to recognise this, such concerns should not just be dismissed. I nearly also lost my own life due to such failures too. The coroner's report can be read here if of interest - https://www.judiciary.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Jean-Pike-Prevention-of-Future-Deaths-Report-2025-0127.pdf
Urgent action is needed. I call on Swansea Bay Health Board to urgently review it's operating procedure and make positive changes to improve services based on my experience to date and the very sad experience of Jean Pike, for others too. Struggling people like myself and Jean Pike deserve better.
I have complained a lot lately so want to also appreciate a few things today. Thank you to everyone who has supported my petition to date and my call for change. Also, thank you to my family and friends who have been here for me from the start and continue to fight for me and support me in my challenges. This support means so much to me and is what keeps me going in my daily battles. Many thanks to Llais Cymru who are now supporting me with my complaints against the health board and are keen to take my story forward as a campaign for change. Thank you to the support of Advocacy Cymru also and their advocacy service for being able to support me. Thanks to Cambrian Mental Health Law who are supporting me with the legal aspect of things and making sure that the professionals are meeting their legal obligations towards me, which has not been the case to date. I also want to recognise something, since being moved to Cefn Coed I have had a far better experience. The staff here actually care as they support me and stand up for me. Whilst they have limited control over community mental health and treatment matters their care towards me has been far more positive than my experience on Ward F which is worth recognising. Ward F should use Cefn Coed as an example of how staff should treat struggling patients - they should be not be dismissed and made to feel worse about themselves when struggling.
Please continue to share my petition with others including your own friends and family, as well as continuing to bring your own personal stories forward. You can share your story by making a comment on this petition or emailing me on jake.robertson3@protonmail.com. As I said whilst this campaign has been positive so far it is just the start and there is much more to be done! I continue to be in touch with the media regarding my story, and the poor state of Mental Health Services. Wales Online are in the process of drafting a report which I hope will be published soon. I will be in touch soon with more calls for support, as I plan how to advance this campaign further whilst also focusing on my recovery needs and getting the support that I vitally need.
Many thanks,
Jacob Robertson
