For more than a year, a three-year-old coyote named Wendy lived through injuries no wild animal should have to survive. When rescuers finally examined her, they found two bullet pellets buried in her head from an earlier shooting, on top of damage from being hit by a car and a facial infection that had gone untreated for months. She lost sight in one eye, hearing in one ear, and part of the bone and teeth on the left side of her face. She could barely eat or breathe. In September 2026, veterinarians at Wildlife Care of Southern California made the decision no one wanted to make. "Letting her go was not giving up on her; it was the final act of compassion we could give her," according to Wildlife Care of Southern California.

Wendy shouldn't have had to endure a year of pain because whoever shot her was never identified. Southern California Pit Bull Rescue is now offering a $10,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction — but a reward only works if it's backed by a real investigation.

We're calling on the Los Angeles Police Department and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to make finding Wendy's shooter a priority, dedicate investigators to follow up on tips, and work with local wildlife rescues to hold the person responsible accountable under California's animal cruelty and firearms laws.
