I am writing this today not just for myself, but for the 1,484 families in New Jersey who are currently displaced and living in temporary hotel or motel placements. According to the latest state data, homelessness in our state has spiked by 57% since 2022, and nearly 14,000 people are currently struggling to find a permanent place to call home.

Behind these numbers are real human beings. I have been in a non-stop legal battle since July 2025, but my housing struggle truly began back in 2020. I am asking the questions that thousands of us are thinking every night:

• Where is the compassion? When families are placed in hotels by agencies, why are they the ones targeted when the system fails?

• Where is the relief? Why is it that even when people know your situation—when they know you have a disabled child and are fighting for your rights—they choose to call you a "squatter" rather than going after the agencies they actually have partnerships with?

• What is the experience? For those of us living this, the experience is one of constant duress. How are those of us without a permanent roof treated compared to those who do?

Is it right to go after the most vulnerable instead of fixing the partnerships that are supposed to protect us? I have been fighting every single day. It is heartbreaking to see people choose litigation over humanity.

We are not just case numbers or "occupants." We are families. We are mothers. We are children with disabilities who deserve a safe, stable environment. It’s time to ask our leaders: Where is the humanity?
