On August 21, a high-speed chase involving federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents ended in a crash on Kent Island, Maryland, that left 22-year-old Oscar Araujo Mejia badly hurt. According to the Queen Anne's County Sheriff's Office, Mejia's car was topping 75 mph and crossing several lanes of traffic when it ran a red light at the Skipjack Parkway intersection and hit another driver who had the right of way. Two unmarked ICE vehicles with their emergency lights and sirens on were pursuing Mejia's car and reached the intersection immediately after the crash.

Mejia's family says he broke two vertebrae in his neck, identified as C5 and C7, and needed 29 stitches to close a head wound. Those injuries have not been independently confirmed, but they are serious enough that his brother has publicly asked for help covering medical and legal costs. Just as troubling, after Mejia left the hospital's trauma center, community members say he was nowhere to be found in the system federal agencies use to track people in immigration custody. His current location and condition still have not been verified.

Local officials have been clear that they did not take part in the federal operation and were not told about it in advance. That means the only people who can answer basic questions, how fast the chase really went, what force was used, and where Mejia is now, are federal agents who have not spoken publicly.

Communities deserve transparency when a federal pursuit ends in a serious crash. ICE and the Department of Homeland Security should open an independent review of the chase and publicly confirm Mejia's whereabouts and medical status.
