I am writing on behalf of my daughter's father, who has been the unfortunate victim of the Duplin County Sheriff's Office not once, but twice. Innocent of the crimes for which he was convicted, he has lost several years of his life to this miscarriage of justice. Stories like his are not isolated incidents but part of an ongoing trend of misconduct extending for more than 40 years. They point to a deeply ingrained culture of injustice, one which saw former Sheriff Blake Wallace and his deputies seemingly operate beyond the rule of law.

Greater scrutiny reveals numerous questionable acts and charges against individuals under Wallace's command. With so many lives irreparably damaged, we must demand accountability and justice. It is time to call for a ward-wide investigation into the Duplin County Sheriff's Office's conduct and bring to light any cases of misconduct, corruption, and inequity.
