Investigate Oklahoma State Superintendent Ryan Walters for Legal & Ethical Violations

The Issue

We Demand an Investigation into Ryan Walters’ Actions!

We, the undersigned concerned citizens, call on Oklahoma House Speaker Kyle Hilbert and the State Legislature to immediately launch an investigation into State Superintendent Ryan Walters for serious legal, ethical, and constitutional violations that threaten Oklahoma’s students, teachers, and education system.

Key Issues:
1️⃣ Violations of Open Meeting Laws
Walters allegedly barred a state senator from an executive session, potentially violating Oklahoma’s Open Meeting Act. Blocking elected officials from oversight meetings raises serious concerns about government transparency. Open government laws exist to ensure the public’s trust, and no official should be above them. Government transparency is not optional.

2️⃣ Unlawful Immigration Reporting Proposal
Walters proposed (and the board approved) requiring parents to disclose immigration status when enrolling their kids in public schools—a direct violation of the 1982 Supreme Court ruling Plyler v. Doe, which protects every child’s right to an education.

3️⃣ Religious Curriculum Mandate in Public Schools
Walters mandated Bible instruction in public schools and threatened teachers with termination if they refused. Forcing religious teaching in public schools is a clear violation of the First Amendment’s separation of church and state. Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond has emphasized that public officials must adhere to constitutional principles and avoid actions that invite costly legal challenges. Walters’ order directly contradicts established legal precedent on religious neutrality in schools.

4️⃣ Financial Mismanagement & Allegations of Illegal Conduct
Reports indicate that Walters has mismanaged millions in public education funds, raising concerns over potential misuse of federal grants intended for Oklahoma schools. Lawmakers from both parties have demanded answers, yet transparency remains elusive. Our students deserve leadership that prioritizes education—not personal or political agendas.

Speaker Hilbert and the Oklahoma Legislature must take immediate action to launch an official investigation into Ryan Walters. This is not about politics—it’s about transparency, accountability, and protecting Oklahoma’s children.

Subject: Protecting Oklahoma’s Students – Rejecting Harmful Policies

Dear [Legislator's Name],

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding recent attempts to collect the addresses and immigration statuses of young children in Oklahoma schools. This effort is not only harmful but also unnecessary for public safety.

Governor Stitt, a fellow Republican, rejected this dangerous proposal, stating:

“Collecting 6, 7, 8-year-old kids’ addresses and immigration status in the state of Oklahoma, that’s not a public safety issue.”

Governor Stitt’s rejection of this measure reflects growing bipartisan concern over policies that could undermine students’ right to education and create fear in our communities. Advocacy groups, educators, and parents across Oklahoma have spoken out against this proposal, with Kica Matos, president of the National Immigration Law Center, emphasizing:

“The governor’s sound rejection of a radical attempt to undermine the right to education is a result of the concerted advocacy of parents, educators, and advocates across Oklahoma who mobilized to oppose it.”

As your constituent, I urge you to stand against policies that seek to intimidate or harm Oklahoma’s students and families. Our schools should be safe spaces focused on education, not immigration enforcement. I respectfully ask for your leadership in ensuring that every child in Oklahoma has access to an education without fear or discrimination.

I appreciate your time and look forward to your response.

Sincerely,
