A Disabled Veteran’s Fight for Survival Against a Housing Provider That Failed Her. This is my story. Three days after I moved into the Edwin M. Lee Apartments for Veterans and Families in San Francisco, I began the second phase of my cancer treatment: daily radiation, just blocks away. At the time, this seemed like a godsend—a place that would provide the stability I desperately needed as I fought for my life. But instead, the very nonprofit meant to provide housing and care for veterans, Swords to Plowshares, has become a source of distress and danger. At their facility, I and other veteran tenants have been consistently mistreated, facing physical violence from staff. This is not just a failure in care but an active threat to our well-being. We have been subjected to mold and other toxins, intensifying health challenges for those of us already battling illnesses. The building is managed by an apartment manager who uses intimidation tactics, making tenants feel unsafe and vulnerable. Moreover, their practices must be scrutinized, from questionable rental ledgers to both past and present evictions. It's imperative that Swords to Plowshares and their staff are held accountable for their failures in protecting us veterans. Veterans have given so much for their country, and they deserve a safe and secure environment, especially when seeking treatment for illnesses like cancer. This is not just about me. This is about ensuring that no other veteran has to endure this mistreatment. An independent, thorough investigation into the organization’s practices is urgently needed.
