On a Friday night in September, a quiet street in Frederick, Maryland turned into the site of a violent standoff between federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers and more than 100 neighbors who had gathered after ICE vehicles were spotted nearby.

Witnesses say officers steered vehicles onto sidewalks and told the crowd to clear out as they moved toward one specific home. Several people describe being pushed, struck, and hit with batons, and some needed hospital care afterward. "We were attacked. Our community was physically attacked by federal law enforcement officers," Frederick City Council President Cesar Diaz said, according to WBAL. Witnesses say officers eventually got inside the house and talked with the family living there, though it doesn't appear anyone was arrested.

No one in Frederick has seen a warrant for this operation. U.S. Representative April McClain Delaney called the reports "deeply concerning" and said the allegations "demand immediate answers and a full, transparent investigation," according to her public statement.

However anyone feels about immigration policy, no family should have to wonder whether stepping outside their own home could end in injury, and no neighborhood should have to guess whether federal agents showed up with legal authority to do what they did.

The Maryland Attorney General has the power to open a real investigation into what happened on that street, review whether officers followed the law, and hold anyone accountable who didn't. Sign the petition to demand that investigation now, before another Frederick family faces the same fear.
