Investigate Bendigo Pet Retreat

The issue

We placed our trust in Bendigo Pet Retreat to care for our beloved dogs while we were away. Our older dog, Poss, who suffers from arthritis, required extra attention and proper monitoring. However, the care he received was far from acceptable.

Initially, we were informed that his limping was due to arthritis, but the truth was far more distressing. Poss had a severe, infected wound that required surgery and ongoing treatment. Veterinary advice indicated the injury had likely been present for several days before being identified, increasing the risk of serious complications such as deep infection, tissue damage, or potential limb loss if left untreated.

It has now been over 5 weeks since the incident, and Poss is still undergoing treatment and monitoring.

Our other dog also came back with issues, which left us heartbroken and raised serious concerns about the level of care and supervision provided.

This personal experience highlights the urgent need for stronger regulation and oversight of pet boarding facilities to ensure the safety and well-being of all animals in their care.

Since sharing our experience publicly, more than 30 individuals have come forward to us directly, including past customers and former workers, sharing similar concerns or experiences relating to care, supervision, or communication. While we cannot independently verify each account, the volume and consistency of these reports is deeply concerning.

These reports consistently raise concerns around delayed injury detection, lack of proper monitoring, and poor communication with pet owners.

The matter was reported to the local council, however it took approximately 3 weeks for an inspection to occur. By that time, the facility had already advised that changes were being made to their yards. Despite the seriousness of the injury and the concerns raised, the investigation concluded with no breach found and no further action taken.

This is not just our story. Many families trust pet boarding facilities with their pets, expecting a safe and caring environment. Pets are cherished members of our families and deserve proper care, supervision, and timely medical attention when placed in the care of professional facilities.

We are calling on local authorities to investigate Bendigo Pet Retreat and strengthen regulations and oversight of pet boarding facilities to ensure proper monitoring, safety, and accountability. This includes regular inspections, appropriate staff training, clear emergency response procedures, and stronger accountability measures.

We owe it to our pets, like Poss, to ensure they are safe and properly cared for, and to prevent other pet owners from experiencing the distress and heartache we have endured.

Please support this petition and help advocate for change to protect animals in boarding facilities.
