During a summer heatwave, shed temperatures allegedly climbed above 100 degrees for hours before management adjusted the ventilation, and thousands of birds reportedly died as a result.

The whistleblower also described hens trapped in feces-filled pits, injured birds left without treatment, and feed shortages that allegedly left animals without food for over a day at a time. Sheds were reportedly infested with mice and mold, and some eggs allegedly sat unrefrigerated for days before reaching store shelves.

Sauder's Eggs markets its products with the slogan "Happy Hens, Quality Eggs," but no marketing slogan or certification can guarantee humane treatment when there's no independent oversight catching what's actually happening inside these sheds.
