Invest in supporting British soldiers and veterans
The Issue
My dad bravely served in Afghanistan, dedicating his life to protect our nation and its citizens. However, ever since he returned home, he has been enduring constant pain due to his back injuries and battles daily with both his physical and mental health. Despite his unwavering commitment and sacrifice, our government has failed to provide the adequate support he desperately needs. This story is not unique to our family; countless British soldiers and ex-military personnel face similar injustices every day.
The British army provides unyielding support and defense to our nation, but when our servicemen and women return, they often find themselves left behind. The stark reality is that many face significant hurdles in receiving basic health and mental support services, find themselves struggling financially due to delays or absence of compensation, and have to navigate complex bureaucratic systems to get what they are owed.
According to the Ministry of Defence, there were 2.6 million UK Armed Forces veterans residing in Great Britain in 2021. A survey conducted by The Royal British Legion revealed that around half of veterans feel unsupported by the government. Many are dealing with chronic pain, mental health issues such as PTSD, and a lack of financial security. Inadequate support not only impacts veterans but also takes a toll on families, potentially affecting future generations due to unresolved trauma and financial instability.
We urgently call upon the government to make immediate changes. Specifically, we urge increased funding to improve healthcare services for veterans, streamline the pension and benefits process to prevent delays, and ensure all soldiers are provided with comprehensive mental health support both during and after their service.
By investing more in the welfare of our soldiers and veterans, we reaffirm our gratitude for their service and ensure they receive the dignity and respect they deserve. These brave men and women have stood up for us; it is now our turn to stand up for them.
Please sign this petition to demand increased support and funding for British soldiers and veterans who have given so much for us all. Together, we can make a difference and ensure a brighter, more secure future for them and their families.
