Invest in Sports

The Issue

Sport at the University of Sheffield is more than just kicking a ball around on a Wednesday afternoon. Sport provides an opportunity for students to find like-minded people, try something new, get active and feel part of something bigger. Sport and physical activity has repeatedly been shown to benefit students' wellbeing and mental health.

However, students are finding it increasingly difficult to take part in sport at the University of Sheffield. The increased costs of kit, venue hire and transport are creating barriers to participation.

Furthermore, the facilities at Goodwin are 1960s constructions; the building is damaged and doesn’t meet the demand of student usage. The recent closure of the swimming pool means we are currently the only Russell Group University without direct access to one. This has not only had an impact on the students at the University but also the wider community.

We’re calling for long term investment in sport across the University, which supports the expanding needs of our students, as well as the local community who also benefit from the use of our facilities.

This petition has been created to lobby the University to Invest into Sport at Sheffield so we can continue to support students and the wider community to participate in Sport, with three main asks:

1) Invest more money into funding for Sports and Physical Activity at University to reduce costs to students.
2) Invest more money into the Sports Facilities.
3) Designated funding/grant scheme from the University for students wanting to participate in sports and physical activity.

Invest in the future, invest in students, invest in sport.
