Introduce Education for Fishers Buying Tackle

Introduce Education for Fishers Buying Tackle
The issue
As passionate residents of Queensland and fervent bird lovers, we have been witnessing a heartrending sight of birds entangled in fishing lines. It personal to us because birds on the Gold Coast, such as Pelicans and Swans, become ensnared and would die painfully without voluntary rescue efforts. The problem lies in the uncontrolled recreational fishing activities that leave behind a trail of fishing lines, lures, and other trash on our beautiful waterways. This litter not only defiles the environment but causes grievous harm to the local birdlife, leading to avoidable casualties, injuries, and trauma among these vulnerable creatures.
The increasing instances of bird entanglement indicate an environmental crisis, and it propels us to seek immediate interventions from the government. That's why we are proposing that recreational fishers can see education to encourage safe disposal of unused tackle at point of sale or on packaging be considered for Queensland. This education would instill more responsibility amongst the fishing community, instigating them to minimize environmental footprints.
Further, a small cost could be added to the price and this could used to fund clean-up initiatives and heighten rescue operations for the distressed avifauna, thereby adding an extra layer of protection for our bird friends. It's high time we took concerted action to protect our precious feathered friends and preserve the pristine Queensland waterways for future generations. Please sign this petition to support the introduction of recreational fishing education in Queensland and help protect our diverse birdlife.
