Every time I drive around Wollongong, I am struck by the lack of colour and artistic expression in our streets. The landscape for me, like for many others, is almost colorless and uninspiring, devoid of artistry, creativity and life. To invigorate our community and enhance the aesthetic appeal of Wollongong region, we request an increase in street art and colour in our public spaces.

Studies show that public art fosters community engagement, increases residents' sense of identity and community pride, and has mental health benefits (Public Art and Health, Royal Society of Public Health, UK, 2019). Yet, our region seems to lack this cultural richness extensively.

Transforming our streets into a vibrant, open-air gallery could not just improve the visual appeal of our city, but also promote a sense of belonging and enhance the overall mood and positivity among residents. Consequently, it is vital to invest in public art and use it as a tool to transform our public spaces.

Now, imagine taking a drive around Wollongong, being greeted by lively murals and colourful art pieces in every corner! A simple change like this can reshuffle the ordinary into something extraordinary.
