The Issue

Imagine a world where the latest computer technology is out of reach for the average person, where vital advancements meant to improve lives are monopolized by corporations. This is not just a distant dystopia; it is happening now due to the unchecked expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) in commercial sectors. AI’s rise has triggered a relentless competition for key computer components, leading to severe shortages that affect public access, while corporations privately hoard these resources for profit.

The impact doesn’t stop with technology access. AI threatens the very fabric of our workforce by posing a danger to future employment stability. It is a looming specter over millions of jobs that could be replaced by machines, radically transforming industries and livelihoods. For many workers, the fear of becoming obsolete grows with each AI-supported advancement, and this anxiety is not unfounded. A report by McKinsey Global Institute predicts that by 2030, as many as 375 million workers (roughly 14 percent of the global workforce) may lose their jobs to automation.

We need change, and we need it now. The time has come to introduce stringent limitations on the business use of artificial intelligence. By enforcing regulatory frameworks that limit AI's application to areas that genuinely benefit the public, we can take back our control. Such policies could include implementing fair trade practices to ensure equal access to essential computing resources and/or investing in retraining programs to prepare the workforce for the technological advances.

Ultimately, we advocate for a balanced approach to AI use that guards against short-sighted profit motives while prioritizing societal welfare and the preservation of human employment. Sign this petition to demand action from authorities and corporations to enact laws limiting AI’s commercial creep and safeguarding our future.
