Currently, there are very limited Sexual Education provisions available for students in the LGBTQ+ community. A failure to educate students on same sex relationships & how to handle them, as with all other relationships, is dangerous , as it massively increases the chances of mental health issues, suicides, suicidal thoughts, self harm and STI’s.

As a bisexual woman I have experienced this and so have my LGBTQ+ peers. I asked several of them about their experiences. We all said that we did not receive any information about same-sex relationships and how to be safe within them.

My aim is to create a much more inclusive Sexual Education programme in schools as I believe that this would promote the belief that gay is okay and would then go on to create a more normalised view of the LGBTQ+ community in children and young people, therefore, reducing bullying and mental health problems.

According to a survey carried out by Stonewall Charity, in 2007, nearly half (45%) of LGBTQ+ students experienced bullying because of their sexual orientation, which increases by nearly 20% for transgender students (64%). In the same survey, it was found that more than four in five transgender people have self harmed, as have three in five, lesbian, gay and bisexual students who don’t identify as transgender. More than two in five young transgender people have attempted suicide, as have one in five, lesbian, bisexual and gay students who don’t identify as transgender. In the age we live in of supposed acceptance and tolerance, this lack of education and support belongs in the dark ages and not something we should tolerate in 2018.

Having a more inclusive sexual education programme throughout the UK would promote healthy and safe sexual relationships for young people, while hopefully reducing the number of LGBTQ+ related mental health problems.
