Damien’s Law

I have been silent for quite some time on Damiens Law. Our petition was not moving forward after months of pushing for change. Covid struck and lockdown ensued it became clear that our campaign needed to halt as Covid related issues dominated everything else.

During this time however, we formed a working group comprising police, families, universities research, and other orgs involved in the issue of missing. Damien’s Law first call for action for a center has since gained some momentum and our commitment change has paid off.

MPIH (Missing Persons Information Hub) launched (today) for International Missing Children’s Day which is a one stop hub of available information for families of the missing to better understand the situation they find themselves in. Similarly, it serves those who are missing, signposting them to where they can seek advice and assistance. This network will offer a compilation of information from those with lived experience of being missing or having a missing loved one to professionals who provide assistance or research in the field of missing. From families who are living this ambiguous loss to the many organizations actively involved in the issues surrounding the subject of missing. This is a one stop hub bringing everyone together and directing them to relevant information.

At MPIH families can find information regarding policies, laws and research and links to the available support & guidance.

Professionals can collaborate on development of policies and vital research without duplication of services.

Missing issues are very often on the bottom of the agenda for most people. However the issue is one that affects not just families but the community at large. It is a (worldwide) social dilemma.

There is a tendency to lump all missing cases into one basket. This very often clouds the judgement of police who make assumptions. Improper risk assessment often leads to serious crime cases being overlooked until it is too late.

Missing is complex and with all eyes on the issue we hope that there will be increased vigilance and collaboration on this topic and less long term missing as a result of a collective community consciousness and appreciation for the very varied issues that affect us all when someone goes missing.
