Introduce Clear Eligibility Criteria for Songwriter of the Year at the BRIT Awards

Introduce Clear Eligibility Criteria for Songwriter of the Year at the BRIT Awards
The Issue
The BRIT Awards’ Songwriter of the Year is widely understood to celebrate current songwriting excellence. Yet there are no publicly available eligibility criteria explaining what qualifies someone for this award.
The recent decision to honour an individual with no publicly released songwriting contributions in the year leading up to the 2026 Awards highlights this gap.
Songwriter of the Year should reflect contemporary creative output within a defined eligibility period, in line with other BRIT categories and major songwriting awards such as the Ivor Novello Awards and the Grammy Award for Songwriter of the Year, which operate with clear time-based and release-led criteria.
Without transparent guidelines, trust in the process is undermined and working songwriters risk being overlooked.
This petition is not about diminishing anyone’s legacy. It is about protecting the integrity of the award and ensuring fair recognition for today’s songwriters.
We call on the organisers of the BRIT Awards to introduce clear, public eligibility standards for Songwriter of the Year.
Please sign to support transparency, fairness, and meaningful recognition for British songwriters.
