The Issue

Growing up as a child who is Deaf or hard-of-hearing in Indiana can often feel like living in a world that doesn't speak your language. My daughter Keyarah is one of those children. She's bright, curious, and full of laughter – but her world can sometimes feel smaller because so few people around her know how to communicate in American Sign Language (ASL). Keyarah often sits in classes or on the playground, struggling to be understood or to understand, simply because others don't know how to sign. Welcoming ASL into our schools is a vital step toward inclusivity, allowing every child to be seen, heard, and valued.

Imagine if students like Keyarah could engage fully with their peers and teachers. Imagine if classmates learned ASL as a standard part of their education, breaking down walls of silence that separate those who can hear from those who cannot. By adding ASL as an elective or required language course in Indiana's school curriculum, we can create these opportunities for inclusion and understanding.

American Sign Language is the fourth most studied language in the United States, according to the Modern Language Association. Not only is it the primary language for the Deaf community, but it is a rich and expressive language that can benefit all learners. The acquisition of ASL can boost cognitive skills, increase awareness and appreciation for the Deaf culture, and improve communication for everyone involved.

For students who speak and hear, learning ASL opens doors to new worlds and perspectives. It develops empathy, enhances cognitive development, and builds bridges across the divides of disability. For children with other speech or communication difficulties, ASL can be the key to unlocking fuller ways of expressing themselves. Teachers, staff, and families all benefit as schools become inclusive spaces where diversity is celebrated and embraced.

Implementing ASL classes in schools across Indiana is not merely an educational enhancement; it's a social responsibility. Deaf and hard-of-hearing students deserve to feel equal to their peers. They deserve to have their language recognized and valued within their educational environments.

This is our chance to give every child the opportunity to communicate freely and effectively, no matter their hearing abilities. Let us teach our children not only to engage with words but to express love, support, and understanding through sign.

Join me in advocating for the inclusion of ASL in Indiana’s school curricula to create a more equitable, understanding, and tightly knit community. Sign this petition today and contribute to a future where every child can be a part of the conversation.
