Growing up in Williamsport, I, like many others, have always dreamt of turning my passion for beauty into a career. I fondly remember watching my older cousins experiment with hairstyles and makeup looks. Their creativity sparked my own interest, but unlike them, who had the opportunity to attend cosmetology schools in distant cities, I realized Williamsport Area High School (WAHS) didn't offer any such program.

For a community where creativity thrives and young talents abound, the lack of a cosmetology program at WAHS is a glaring gap in our educational offerings. The beauty industry, encompassing hairdressing, makeup, skincare, and nail artistry, is a multi-billion dollar sector in the U.S. In 2019, it employed over 670,000 professionals, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. This industry provides countless opportunities for entrepreneurship and artistic expression, but without local access to training, students must look elsewhere, adding unnecessary hurdles.

A cosmetology program at WAHS would benefit our community immensely. By equipping students with essential skills, we can create pathways to lucrative careers right here in our city. Implementing such a program will not only engage students, improving school retention rates, but will also align education with market demand, thereby potentially reducing unemployment.

Schools nationwide are recognizing the value of broadening curricula to include vocational training in fields like cosmetology. For instance, cosmetology courses in Philadelphia high schools have reported increased student attendance and enthusiasm, as well as successful transitions to careers post-graduation. It's time we offer our students similar opportunities.

Let's come together to advocate for a cosmetology program at WAHS. By collaborating with local beauty businesses and utilizing state grants available for vocational training development, we can establish a robust curriculum that prepares students for future success.
