The Issue

As a devoted student who dreams of making a difference in the field of social work, I am saddened to find that the University of Minnesota Twin Cities does not have a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program. This institution, renowned for its educational excellence, currently offers a Master of Social Work (MSW) program. However, for students like me who are deeply passionate about social work and committed to earning an undergraduate degree at this prestigious university, there is no option to pursue a BSW.

This lack of a Bachelor of Social Work program is unfortunate not only for prospective students but also for the university community as a whole. The introduction of a BSW program can open up numerous opportunities: it prepares students for immediate entry into the social work field, acts as a foundation for advanced study, and meets the growing demand for qualified social workers within our community and nationwide.

Social workers drive change and address some of the most challenging issues in society. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of social workers is projected to grow 12 percent from 2020 to 2030, faster than the average for all occupations. Furthermore, with societal issues such as healthcare, family welfare, and addiction on the rise, the demand for well-trained and dedicated social workers is critical.

The University of Minnesota Twin Cities prides itself on being inclusive, diverse, and forward-thinking. By implementing a BSW program, the university can not only align more closely with its mission but also attract a diverse range of students who are eager to contribute to positive social change.

I urge the administration of the University of Minnesota to consider the immense benefits and potential impact of establishing a Bachelor of Social Work program. It is an opportunity for the university to expand its educational offerings and reaffirm its commitment to supporting and nurturing socially-conscious leaders.

Help us make this vision a reality for future students who are enthusiastic and passionate about their roles as future social workers. Please sign this petition to call for the introduction of a Bachelor of Social Work program at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities.
