Why is our Galaxy Named Milky Way Still, Let's Change It

The Issue

Our galaxy is named, Milky Way. Other galaxies are named with technical terms like cloud or dwarf, or Supercluster. Some galaxies get indicants like numbers, roman numerals, letters, like A or VIII or MD19. These are serious sounding names. They are contemporary, scientific. Milky Way is a silly name and we've done it to ourselves so let's change it, it's time.

Some Reasons For Change:

1. It is redundant

  • The name is from the latin, via lactea or way of milk, and further back from the Greek, galaxías kýklos, milky circle. Galaxías means milky, so when you say Milky Way Galaxy, you might accidentally be saying Milky Way Milky. This is even more childish than the normal name.

2. It is old fashioned

  • It's called milky because the greeks thought it looked like runny breast milk. If it still looked like that, then it might be a good name, but it doesn't look like that anymore, it looks like a bunch of stars glowing. We have science and telescopes so we don't have to come up with ignorant stories.

3. It is greek

  • Ancient greek and latin names for things is idiotic. Let's be our own people and have our own names for things.

The new name could be a combo of a bunch of things, this petition is only to delete Milky Way and start the process for a new name, but just as an idea, we could cement our own modern selves and choose something very cool that is letters and numbers and dashes, very technical like the galaxy APM 08279+5255 or the galaxy MCG+04-35-017 or come up with a new name that suits our modern, educated ears, Near-Earth Cluster or Star Density Zone. I'd even be fine with another descriptive name about how it looks as long as was described like it looks to our modern eyes, like Star Disk or Glowcloud. As long as we get rid of "Milky Way", I don't really give a crap.
