Today the Nigerian Army held a press conference on the #EndSARS protests of the past few weeks in Nigeria. Rather surprisingly for an army that has been accused of killing peaceful protesters in cold blood, they made no reference to shocking incident, electing instead to threaten those who they say want to destabilise Nigeria and undermine the Army by reporting them to the ICC. You would expect a professional army concerned about its reputation and image to state clearly that it would investigate the incident and go as far as allowing independent international investigators to examine all the circumstances surrounding it, in order that the findings can be as objective as possible, and with the ultimate aim of clearing its name. The fact that nothing of the sort was announced at the press conference speaks volumes. One can only hope that the ICC would take this on board when it starts its preliminary investigation and assessment of the forensic and eyewitness evidence of the events of that day of infamy.
