Add a 105-pound weight class for female competitors.

Currently the IBJJF only offer 5 weight classes for women.  The smallest weight class is 118 pounds and under. Most women who compete will cut weight in order to be at the top of the weight class.  This mean if they compete at the 118-pound weight class they could weight as much as 125 pounds.

There are many women who train BJJ and would like to compete but weight 110 pounds or less.  For example, I weight 95 pounds.  Even at the 118-pound weight class this puts me at a great disadvantage over my competitors. IBJJF does offer a 105-pound weight class but only for the Asian Open, making a total of 6 weight classes for that competition only.  This additional weight class is not offered in the United States or Europe.

I have contacted IBJJF as well as many local promotions and the response is the same, “the demand for a 105-pound weight class isn’t there.” If 105 pounds isn’t offered how do you know the demand isn’t there. I have meet a great many women weighting under 105 who want to compete but have decided against it because the 10-pound or more difference is too much to create a fair challenge.

Divisions based on weight and age were designed to create a fair match to challenge one’s skills against an opponent of equal size and strength.  There are many women, young and old big and small, that want the opportunity to compete but without a weight class of their own it is simply fighting an absolute division.

Please sign this petition to let the IBJJF there is a demand for additional weight classes for the women division. Thank you.
