Bring back fall graduation commemoration ceremonies, UAlbany

The Issue

Recently, the University at Albany announced it will not be hosting a December Commencement ceremony starting with the 2017-18 academic year. This decision was made without consulting those most impacted--students. Supposedly, the rationale is to bring a "greater sense of community." However, we find the decision inconsiderate to those whose academic plans don’t align with a spring completion date. Essentially, the entire student population is effected including traditional freshmen, transfers and graduate students.

Students who pay tuition to attend this university should have the option to graduate, once their degree requirements are met. Which means a fall commencement is necessary. This isn't the first time the University at Albany has made this drastic change without considering its students and faculty. The steps taken to make this decision were premature and disrespectful to students who planned on being recognized in the fall. It is surprising that this university, after recent events with miscommunication towards students, would take initiatives such as this.

Please sign this petition to help appeal the James R. Stellar, Interim President's decision.
