The British Embassy in Seoul has raised the issue of cruelty towards animals on numerous occasions with the South Korean authorities and explained that the UK public and parliamentarians would like to see Korean regulation that would bring the practice to an end. The British Embassy also noted that they will continue to seek further opportunities to raise the issue, in particular as we approach the Winter Olympics in 2018 in PyeongChang, and will monitor developments in the practice in the Republic of Korea. They also believe it necessary to work with governments around the world to build an agreement on animal welfare standards and to phase out cruel and inhumane farming and trapping practices. The unregulated profit driven dog and cat meat trade promotes violence and desensitization in children as they often blowtorch and beat live and conscious dogs in broad daylight in busy markets. Dog and cat meat farms pose great health risks to humans, many do not have waste disposal or sewage treatment facilities allowing sewage to flow into rivers. Consumption of dog and cat meat spreads disease and illness such as rabies and cholera. Although S. Korea has an animal protection act, police and public officials do not enforce the law. Please read the animal protection act here: http://koreandogs.org/info/korean-animal-rights-law/
We urge the U.S. Embassy in Seoul to work collaboratively with the South Korean Government, the British Embassy in Seoul, and other government Ambassadors to end the dog and cat meat trade. Korea is a modern civilized society and should be held accountable for condoning such barbaric uncivilized practices and blatant illegalities. We urge you to take immediate action to stop the unimaginable suffering inflicted on the dogs and cats of Korea. The favor of your reply is requested.
