Interfaith Coalition for Gun Safety
The Issue
Revised 7.6.22
Gun Violence is a public health crisis- The American Medical Association
We grieve and are mortified by the staggering number of mass shootings and other acts of violence with guns in our country.
As members of various religious and other organizations, we seek Divine guidance but, we are called to go far beyond “thoughts and prayers” to work for systemic changes to improve gun safety.
We bear witness by joining together to represent that a broad spectrum of Americans who are ready for and demand change.
We call on all elected officials to enact decisive change.
We pledge to never forget the mass shootings and other acts of violence of our people and to never become distracted.
While we are encouraged by the approved bi-partisan legislation containing gun and school safety measures, the law falls far short of addressing the immediate and critical gun safety measures listed below.
1. Ban the sale of high power assault weapons and high capacity magazines.
2. Eliminate gun manufacturer immunity.
3. Require all states to enact standard and stringent red flag measures.
4. Strengthen universal background checks required by all gun sellers.
5. Raise the age to purchase a gun to 21 years.
6. Implement universal background checks, mandatory training and requirement for safe storage of guns.
7. Require a mandatory 3 day or more waiting period.
8. Initiate a gun buy-back program.
