The housing crisis in Sydney has been at its worst since early 2020.

Transport Asset Manager for NSW has vacant, commercial premises in and around Central Station, a place where many homeless and stranded visitors find themselves.

The Sydney Local Environmental Plan 2012 (NSW) governs the land zoning:

Zone SP5   Metropolitan Centre

1   Objectives of zone

• To promote the primary role of the zone as a centre for employment and permit residential accommodation and serviced apartments where the accommodation complements employment-generating land uses.

The petitioner is seeking public interest in the long term design, development and maintenance of short to medium term accommodation for vulnerable, unemployed, underpaid or stranded persons in the Sydney area.

Health and social support services would be incorporated into the hotel to plan individuals' holistic rehabilitation and transition into stable housing and the workforce.
