Aquí, en Guayaquil, la ciudad más grande del Ecuador, nos enfrentamos a una crisis social y ambiental, y necesitamos tu ayuda.

Todos los días, la transnacional francesa Veolia, que supuestamente está a cargo del sistema de alcantarillado de Guayaquil, bota 40,000 metros cúbicos de aguas residuales al Estero Salado, el bello estero de manglar tropical en el centro de nuestra ciudad. Algunas partes del Estero tienen hasta 100 veces el límite permitido de contaminación fecal. Han talado varias hectáreas de manglares que, además de absorber CO2 y ser una barrera natural de protección contra inundaciones, son el hábitat donde cientos de especies de aves, peces, tortugas y el cocodrilo en peligro de extinción, tienen y cuidan a sus crías.

A través de su empresa local Interagua, están destruyendo este frágil ecosistema y poniendo en peligro la salud de cientos de miles de las familias más pobres de nuestro país, en su mayoría Afrodescendientes. Alrededor de 45,000 familias no están conectadas a sistema de alcantarillado funcional, no hay alcantarillado pluvial exponiendo a la población a aguas estancadas y plagas de mosquitos, y no se puede beber el agua de la llave, sin embargo, Interagua igual les cobra por el servicio.

Una gran campaña a nivel nacional de denuncia hacia Interagua está comenzando a tener resultados. Están prometiendo resolver la situación, sin embargo, hemos escuchado muchas veces estas promesas. Sabemos que sólo la presión pública e internacional será efectiva para que se hagan responsables.

Por favor firma esta petición para que Veolia e Interagua haga su trabajo, provean alcantarillado sanitario y pluvial, y agua potable para todos en Guayaquil, y dejen de contaminar el Estero Salado.

Here, in Ecuador’s largest city, Guayaquil, we’re facing an environmental and social crisis and need your help.

Every day, the French transnational Veolia, which is in charge of Guayaquil’s water system, dumps 40,000 cubic metres of untreated sewage into the beautiful tropical estuary “Estero Salado” at the heart of our city. Some parts of our estuary now have 100 times the fecal contamination permitted. They’ve cut down acres of mangrove trees that provide a nursery for birds, snapping turtles and endangered crocodiles, absorb CO2 and protect us from flooding.

With their local company Interagua, Veolia is devastating the fragile ecosystem and risking the health of tens of thousands of some of the poorest people in our country, overwhelmingly Black communities. 45,000 families are not connected to a proper sewage system, there is no effective drainage for the rainwater so mosquitoes breed in stagnant pools and the tap water is not safe to drink, yet Interagua bills people anyway.

A big national campaign to hold them to account is starting to have an effect. We are hearing promises that they will fix the situation, but we’ve heard this all before. We know that only public and international pressure will make them clean up their act.

Please sign this petition to get Veolia and Interagua to do their job, provide sanitation, drainage and safe drinking water for everyone in Guayaquil and stop polluting our estuary.
