The Issue

This petition finds its roots in a stark personal reality. I have witnessed young children in my life being incessantly left at home, unsupervised and vulnerable, mostly overnight by themselves. The alarming frequency of such instances pushes me to implore our legislative bodies to initiate urgent changes in our childcare laws. We need to set a legal minimum age for leaving minors unattended at home overnight.

Statistics reveal that within 5 minutes, an unattended stove can turn a house into a fatal inferno. Moreover, according to Kid's Health, young children are not sufficiently cognitively developed to respond to emergencies until at least age 12. This is not a matter of overprotection, but of child safety and mitigating risks of potential accidents, ranging from fires, injuries, to poisonings.

Therefore, we call on our lawmakers to consider the psychological, physiological, and developmental capacities of minors when crafting regulations concerning their supervision. An enforced law, stipulating an appropriate minimum age for leaving children home alone, will alleviate this overwhelming issue. The safety and well-being of our children must always be our primary concern. Please, sign this petition and contribute to safeguarding our children's futures.
