Install traffic lights on Somerset Avenue Roundabout on the A370 in Weston Super Mare

The Issue

Every day countless near misses are endured by residents of Weston village, attempting to pull out on to Somerset Avenue roundabout on the A370 out of Weston Super Mare. It’s is a completely blind roundabout due to an overgrown centre which completely blocks the view of the other side of the roundabout and cars entering from the A371, and is made even more dangerous, because there is a 50mph speed limit on the roundabout so it is used as a racetrack as many drivers don’t bother to slow down!

There are accidents daily with cars misjudging the roundabout or the speed people are going when they appear from nowhere! Pedestrians trying to cross the dual carriageway to get to the secondary school, garage or the only bus route to serve Loxton Campus in Haywood Village, literally take their life into their hands. The underpass that is provided is muddy, overgrown and unlit and is a dangerous place frequented by groups of drug users and youths who see fit to race up and down the footpaths on motorbikes making it an impossible alternative.

The installation of traffic lights on all entrances/exits with a safe pedestrian crossing route provided on the Flowerdown Bridge section of the roundabout, will have a huge impact on making this currently dangerous stretch of road a far safer and easier place to navigate and potentially save lives in the process. It will also serve to slow down the current ‘boy racers’ who race their cars up and down Somerset Avenue every night

North Somerset Council have installed traffic lights at the roundabouts either side of this one and yet see fit to leave hundreds of residents unable to safely get out of the village without extreme risk of injury or worse. Left as it is, with the ever increasing amount of housing being built in the area, the Council will most definitely have a life changing injury or fatality on their hands unless this matter is addressed urgently!
