The Safety Drive Roundabout in Poole, Dorset, has become a notorious hotspot for tragic collisions, resulting in numerous fatalities in recent times. This very busy junction has very sadly and ironically turned the curiously named safety drive into a huge safety hazard for both drivers and bikers pedestrians etc, causing awful accidents that could likely be preventable with the installation of traffic lights. Even as an experienced road user this junction proves difficult to navigate due to the volume of fast-moving traffic it almost always has plus the size of it as locals will know. So the local community and visitors must come together to urge/force the local authorities to take immediate action to prevent further loss of life and to restore safety and confidence whilst using this main route.

The installation of traffic lights at the Safety Drive Roundabout would regulate the flow of traffic, reduce high-speed entries into the roundabout, and provide clear right-of-way to vehicles and pedestrians. As clearly the reduced 40MPH isn’t sufficient. Traffic lights have proven to be an effective measure in similar scenarios across the UK, significantly reducing the risk of collisions and ensuring the orderly movement of traffic. According to a study by the Department for Transport, implementing traffic control devices can decrease accidents at intersections by as much as 40%, which translates into lives saved and injuries avoided.

Local residents have witnessed the increase in traffic due to ongoing developments and road users unfamiliar with the area, which only adds to the peril. Despite various signage and warnings, current measures have proven inadequate. The time to act is now, with the placement of traffic lights offering a realistic and effective solution to safeguard the community.
