A major concern in our community is the lack of a traffic light at a crucial intersection where a major highway passes by our Benton Community Schools. The current situation is not only inconvenient but also poses a significant threat to the safety of students, parents, and school staff.

Every day, school buses, parents, and children are forced to cross four lanes of fast-moving traffic, where the speed limit is set to 55 mph. However, it is common knowledge that vehicles often travel at speeds exceeding 65 mph at this intersection. The absence of a regulated traffic signal means drivers are less likely to slow down, increasing the risk of accidents and putting lives in danger. This school year alone, there has been at least 3 accidents during pickup/drop-off times. One involving a school bus.

High traffic times, particularly during school drop-off and pick-up hours, expose our children to unnecessary risks. A traffic light would not only regulate the flow of traffic but also provide much-needed safety and peace of mind to everyone who uses this route. By installing a traffic light, we can ensure that vehicles are appropriately directed, and children can cross more safely.

Moreover, studies have shown that the installation of traffic lights in high-risk areas significantly reduces accidents and fatalities. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, properly installed traffic signals can reduce crash-related fatalities by 22% and injury crashes by 28%. This further emphasizes the need for immediate action.
