The Issue

On September 13, 2025, I experienced a near-miss at the intersection of Gwynnbrook Avenue and Reisterstown Road in Owings Mills, Baltimore County. It was one of those moments that is permanently etched in my memory: a heart-stopping second where time seemed to slow down, and fate decided I would be spared from a head-on collision. Tragically, later that same day, three other drivers at this very intersection were not as fortunate.

This intersection has become notorious for its lack of safety measures. With busy traffic flow from Reisterstown Road and increasing congestion in the area, the absence of a traffic light presents a clear and present danger. In Baltimore County, the safety of our community should be a priority and installing a traffic light at this intersection could prevent future tragedies.

Statistics support the urgent need for action. According to the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration, intersections without traffic lights see up to 40% higher accident rates compared to those with lights. In the Owings Mills area alone, recent reports have shown a surge in traffic incidents, specifically at uncontrolled intersections like Gwenbrook and Reisterstown.

The simple and effective solution is the installation of a traffic light, which would improve traffic flow and significantly reduce the risk of accidents. Implementing this measure would not only enhance safety for drivers but also for pedestrians, including school children and local residents who cross these roads daily.

In addition to this crucial safety feature, a bar code scan option can be added at the corner to facilitate resident feedback and gather ongoing input on the intersection's safety performance. This innovative approach will allow for rapid reporting and response to any issues that arise, ensuring the community remains involved and informed.

Your support can make a tangible impact. By signing this petition, you are advocating for the well-being and safety of everyone who travels through this vital crossroads in Owings Mills. Join us in urging the Baltimore County authorities to prioritize this project for the betterment of our community. Sign today to drive change and make our roads safer for all.
